Crime virtually blamed on residents

"What else can we do," asks a resident!

The article “Residents need to ‘up’ their security”, Comaro CHRONICLE November 20, page 7, is insulting to say the least.

t is virtually blaming the levels of crime on the residents and their apparent lack of security. The fact is SAPS and private security companies are completely ineffective and are unable or unwilling to do the job they are employed to do. The majority of residents are about as secure as they can get and are still getting robbed and attacked. What more can be done to ‘up’ security when we already have street cameras, electric fencing and house alarms linked to armed response, security gates inside and out, burglar bars, large and small dogs, panic buttons, valuables out of sight and locked away and neighbourly vigilance?

We are prisoners in our own homes and living in fear. In recent months, homes with security as described here have been broken into and cleaned out of all valuables in less than three minutes. If SAPS or Michelle Pelser has a security system that can withstand that, please let us know.

Glenvista, Mulbarton and Bassonia have a wonderful Community Forum which is a group of individuals who volunteer their own time and resources to perform a function that should be done by the police.

The entire New South has one tiny police station in Mondeor to service this huge area which must contribute a huge amount in tax revenue. What is needed is widespread police presence, proactive policing and private security (not re-active) and visible, effective law enforcement. Residential security, such as alarms and vigilance is no deterrence to these criminals.

APS need to know what they are dealing with and deal with it and stop offloading their responsibility on the people they are paid to protect and serve.
