We’ve had quite a few frosty mornings this past week and as much as I don’t like the freezing cold these mornings do have some benefits, killing off many germs and viruses from the hot summer months. Then after the cold frost in the morning come gorgeous sunny days with clear blue skies. Wonderful! So not all bad news.
Happy Father’s Day
So, have you decided on how you’ll be treating your dad this coming Sunday? Browsing around the shops there’s so much you can buy, if you have the money. I suspect we’re in for a cold winter, so a scarf or gloves and thermal underwear I’m sure will be gratefully received.
Book lunch or dinner at a local restaurant or make him a delicious meal at home. Make it even more special by inviting the immediate family over too to celebrate his special day with him.
Hot stuff
For the dad who enjoys something flavoursome, tasty and with a bite, to enjoy with his food, you won’t go wrong with a gift boxed selection of sauces from Senhor Peri Peri. Five sauces ranging from Lemon and Herb Sauce (Play it Safe), Mild Peri Peri Sauce (Add a little Spice to Your Life), Medium Peri Peri (Let’s bring Spicy Back), Hot Peri Peri Sauce (You Know you Want Me) and X-Hot Peri Peri Sauce (This is my warning Label). The boxed sauces sell for R150 per box. There’s a branch situated in Comaro View Shopping Centre, Bassonia. Phone 011 432 2247 for more information.
Split pea and bacon soup
Nothing quite beats a bowl of hot soup for lunch or dinner during the winter months. Buy (or bake) some crusty bread or rolls and enjoy!
Ingredients
100g streaky bacon, rinded and chopped
25g butter
1 large onion, peeled and chopped
100g split peas
900ml white stock or water with a chicken stock cube
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Method
Heat a large pot and add the bacon, fry in its own fat until softened. Add the butter and fry the onion without colouring. Add the split peas, stock or water and stock cube and a little salt and pepper. Cook until the peas are soft and blend or mash with a potato masher. Serve with the bread or rolls.
That’s it for this week. Shop till you drop!
