The Bag Lady

As winter continues for a little while yet, enjoy a tasty curry from Eastern cafe in Rosettenville, and a cup of Fruit-skin tea, using Jamie Oliver's recipe.

Hope you’ve all enjoyed a good week. Weather wise it’s been strange and I kept thinking we were going to get a shower or two, which would have been a blessing. Watering the garden is a chore but pot plants even more so because they dry out quickly. You really need to water them daily. We don’t have a big garden. We have more pot plants than garden, so it’s all rather time consuming.

Enjoy a curry

Chilly evenings definitely call for a good curry and at Eastern Café in Rosettenville, you’ll be sure to find some tasty options, including crab curry. Besides curries, you’ll be able to try bunny chows, mutton and chicken breyani and other delicious meals. The prices are really great and Mr Delivery is now available for your convenience. Raj, the owner, also caters for functions. Phone 071 750 7333.

Back in time

A few weeks ago we published an article, The Southern Mirror, with photos from the past (Comaro CHRONICLE, page 3, July 19) and one of our readers who saw it, sent me a menu for Wimpy dating back to 1972.

It was really great to see the prices and hard to believe how much food has gone up. Back then you could enjoy a Wimpy Special Grill for 65 cents, a fish special cost you 60 cents, curry and rice was 65 cents, a Wimpy king-size burger was 40 cents, cheeseburgers were 28 cents and then a toasted ham, cheese and tomato sandwich cost a mere 25 cents. A cup of coffee was 12 cents, floats 20 cents and a milkshake cost 20 cents.

This is a perfect, soothing drink – especially if you feel a cold coming on. Serves four.

Ingredients

Skin from one pineapple, chopped.

A two-centimetre piece of fresh turmeric, peeled and grated, or one teaspoon ground turmeric.

Zest of one orange.

Four-centimetre piece of ginger, sliced.

Honey, to sweeten (optional).

Method

Place the pineapple skin in a pan with the turmeric, orange zest and ginger. Cover with 1.2 litres of water and bring to the boil over medium heat. Remove from heat, allow to infuse for three minutes, then strain. Sweeten with honey, if you like, then serve.

And that’s it for this week. Shop till you drop!
