The Bag Lady

We are already halfway through the first month of 2015 and I couldn’t believe it when I was shopping and guess what I spotted? Winter clothing and…… valentine’s gifts.

True to form, Woollies is selling all its Christmas range of cakes, biscuits, etc, at 50 percent off the full price. What a pity I’m full to the brim with these goodies but what a bargain!

Back to school

My two children are long out of school and even though I was aware of back to school necessities, I was completely gobsmacked at the long queues at all the stationery shops over the past week.  It was with some relief I left what I needed to buy for another day and walked out of the one shop, thankful I wasn’t the one purchasing stationery. Quite a few moms were walking around the shops with blank expressions, obviously daunted by the long list of stationery requirements needed for back to school. I’m sure the list is longer now than it used to be and obviously much more expensive at the check-out.

School lunches

For the first few days I think every mom makes a special effort but after a few weeks you run out of ideas and quite honestly, the chore becomes somewhat tedious!

Sandwiches are always a winner but don’t use lettuce or tomato because by the time your child is eating the packed lunch, the schoolbag will have been left in the sun and the sandwich will be warm and soggy.

FRUIT

Rather stick to sliced ham, cheese spread, peanut butter or even jam.

Savoury muffins or scones make a great alternative and won’t go soggy either. Make from scratch or buy the readymade mixes. Bake a whole batch at the weekend and freeze for the week ahead.

Fresh fruit is also good but not bananas (they go squashy) or oranges (too time consuming and messy to peel). Rather pack a small bunch of grapes or an apple, pear or peach. Dried fruit is convenient and not too pricey. As a treat a small packet of biltong or dry wors will be appreciated.

Try to remember to also pack a piece of kitchen roll to wipe sticky and messy fingers.

Don’t forget a small carton of fruit juice, or buy a plastic bottle and fill with fruit juice. As the day goes on your child can then refill the bottle with water. Dehydration can cause headaches and fatigue.

Good luck!

That’s it for this week. Shop till you drop!
