WATCH: Residents of South Hills and surrounding areas took their fight to Rand Water

Nine days without water for Johannesburg wards 56 and 57 residents.

Frustrated community members of South Hills and surrounding areas marched to the headquarters of Rand Water on Impala Road, Dikole Section, Johannesburg south.

They have not had water for nine days.

Angry residents say that the situation is untenable. A community member at the march pointed out that this issue is a years-long issue and that there seem to be no concrete plans to address it.

“The water cuts are inhumane, it is unsanitary and people are going to get sick. We are all tired, we just want water,” said Yolanda van Heerden.

Councillor Faeeza Chame said they have raised the water issue with officials at Johannesburg Water (JHB Water) and Rand Water but were ignored.

The councillor also said she shared residents’ frustrations and pledged to raise the water issue at the City of Johannesburg’s (COJ) Section 79 Committee meetings on oversight and governance.

JHB Water sent out a press release addressing the water problem in South Hills: “The South Hills Tower is empty due to a lack of incoming supply. The reservoir is low because of high demand. Pumping will resume once supply improves.

We regret the inconvenience caused to our customers.” Community members threatened further protest action.
