Turffontein Primary School helps learners stay healthy

Turffontein Primary School teach their foundation phase learners the importance of healthy eating.

Turffontein Primary School had their annual foundation phase Healthy Breakfast Picnic on September 18.

The breakfast was for Grade R to Grade Three learners and is part of developing life skills.

The picnic will also teach the learners to make healthy choices when it comes to what they eat, because food affects how children develop which affects how they learn in the classroom.

Too much sugar and junk food can make kids hyperactive and then very tired which affects their focus at school.

Nthombi Twala, the foundation phase head of department, outlined the importance of having the healthy breakfast picnic every year.

The Grade Two class enjoyed a healthy lunch.

“This develops our kids life skills. We do this picnic under the theme of healthy eating is healthy living. We do this picnic annually and we, as teachers, have seen a great improvement in the children’s eating habits and what food they bring to school. Introducing them to fruit and veg that they might enjoy or teaching them about including it in their meals,” said Nthombi.

“They feel better physically and mentally and have much more focus on their school work. We just want to make sure the healthy choices are consistently made as they are still very young,” she concluded.
