Johannesburg Society for the Blind Second Chance Matric Programme

Johannesburg Society for the Blind prides itself with their flagship Second Chance Matric Programme.

The Johannesburg Society for the Blind (JCB) is proud to announce that their matric class of 2024 has achieved an impressive 90% pass rate in the Second Chance Matric Programme, their flagship programme.

This milestone represents a significant achievement for them, reaffirming their mandate to ‘Educate a Blind Child’.

The class of 2024 included 10 dedicated students: five of whom wrote their matric exams for the first time, while the remaining five were rewriting theirs.

Among these remarkable students is Simphiwe Dube the top achiever. His journey is a powerful testimony to the strength of resilience, faith and determination.

Simphiwe Dube says he is the first one to complete matric in his generation.

“This is a big accomplishment not only for me but also for my family, as I’m the first to complete matric in my generation. When I joined JSB, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but with the consistent support and encouragement from the JSB team, I was able to push through and achieve my matric. This is just the beginning,” Simphiwe shared.

Another success story is that of Deleen Maleka, who secured a diploma pass after rewriting her matric exams for the third time, Maleka’s determination and perseverance have been truly inspiring. “This journey hasn’t been easy, but JSB gave me a second chance, and I’m proud to say I grabbed it with both hands,” she said.

The head of the academy, Nkosana Kubheka, expressed his pride in the students’ accomplishments while acknowledging the many challenges faced by the organisation throughout the exam season.

“The 2024 matric cycle was far from smooth. We encountered numerous hurdles and setbacks, but our commitment to our mandate never wavered,” he stated.

Kubheka added that there were moments when the journey seemed impossible and the road ahead discouraging.

“At times, the bigger picture was blurred by the obstacles we faced, but our faith, resilience, and dedication to our mission kept us moving forward. I cannot thank God and my team enough for their resolute commitment.

Together, we made the impossible possible,” he said. He also extends his gratitude to the group of scribers who volunteered their time and effort to assist during the exams.

“The volunteers were remarkable in helping us fulfil our mission. Their support made a significant difference in the students’ success, and we are deeply grateful,” Kubheka remarked.

“At the JSB, we remain steadfast in our commitment to providing quality education and opportunities for visually impaired individuals. The success of the matric class of 2024 serves as a powerful reminder that with perseverance and a supportive community, no obstacle is too formidable to overcome.

“JSB is dedicated to empowering blind and visually impaired individuals through education, skills development, and advocacy. Our flagship Second Chance Matric Programme offers visually impaired youth the opportunity to complete their matric and pursue further education, ensuring that no one is left behind.”
