Community pulls together to try sending one of their own to Spain

A potential opportunity of a lifetime for Johannesburg-teen in Europe.

Johannesburg south residents hosted a fundraising event at the Southdale Shopping Centre to send one of their own to Spain.

Stanford Banda (17) is trying to raise funds to travel to Spain, where he has been invited for soccer tryouts in Villaviciosa de Odón. Banda got the backing of content creator, Bill the Saint, who used his almost 20 000 TickTok following to invite community members to the fundraising event.

The ‘park and chill’ fundraiser was also attended by Tonica Vasconcellos aka Mama Saint, who is part of the team of people raising funds for Banda.

“I would like to thank Mama Saint and Bill the Saint for hosting this fundraiser for me, much appreciated. Park and chill helped me out in adding a bit of funds into the money we have already raised but we are not there yet, we would like more,” said Banda.

Banda, who plays for Turffontein-based Black City Aces FC, has so far managed to raise only R13 500 of the R70 000 needed for his travel and stay in Spain for his try-out days.

An urgent R15 000 payment must be made for Banda’s accommodation, with the remainder needed before August 15. Interested donors and those willing to assist can contact Thulani Charles Msibi on 063 504 6785.
