Spreading kindness to Cape Town

Mother and daughter duo shared their Kindness Rocks journey while on a recent trip to Cape Town.

Kabira and Razina Dewan, the mother and daughter duo from Robertsham who recently published their book, Kindess Rocks 101 for Complete Beginners, recently visited Cape Town to further spread their kindness.

They painted 40 rocks and chose to hide them all over Cape Town in places like the V & A Waterfront, Milnerton Beach, World of Birds, Boulders Penguin Beach, Sea Point, Hout Bay and Bo-Kaap.

Each painted rock has a sticker with instructions on the reverse side, inviting the finder to either keep the rock or re-hide it as well as share a picture on the Joburg Rocks Facebook page.

The colourful eight rocks sent to Germany.

“It is always such a pleasure to see how the rocks have impacted someone else’s life and brought positivity and kindness which is exactly the intention of Kindness Rocks,” highlighted Kabira.

An anonymous participant shared on the Joburg Rocks Facebook page that she was so excited to have found one of their rocks at the V& A Waterfront and the timing was just perfect as it was her birthday. It was like receiving an unexpected gift that made her day and she also shared that she would re-hide the rock.

“Unfortunately, not everyone takes the time to post their find. Once we hide the rocks, we have the comfort in knowing that the rock will impact whoever finds it positively, whether they post feedback or not,” she added.

When they had just eight rocks left, they saw a post on a sister Facebook group: Cape Town Rocks. Sandra Laurenz was visiting Cape Town from Germany and during her three-month stay in the Mother City; she had painted and hidden well over 400 rocks all over Cape Town.

It was the end of her trip and she was reaching out to South African rock painters for their painted creations to take back to Germany and the enthusiastic kindness spreader, Razina jumped at the opportunity to send her Kindness Rocks to Germany. A rock swap then took place with generous Sandra.

“Sandra has since posted that she is back in Germany and has started hiding the South African-painted rocks in local parks in Germany. We look forward to seeing more feedback on the journey our Kindness rocks have taken,” said Kabira.

Beautiful Sauerland stones Razina received in exchange for her rocks.

Kindness mum, Kibira, emphasized: “Another rock painter shared reasons why we, rock painters, paint and hide rocks which sum it up so perfectly – painting rocks is relaxing, its therapy, painting rocks allows us to be creative without any pressure.

Hiding rocks is fun too. It gives us reason to get out of the house and explore the outdoors but most importantly, we hide rocks as a random act of kindness to bring smiles to others and a word of encouragement because you never know who might need it.”
