Johannesburg Harriers Athletics Club announces city marathon

The club is thrilled about the rebranding and first Johannesburg City Marathon and hopes the event is as successful as the previous races.

Johannesburg Harriers Athletics Club (JHAC) proudly present the Johannesburg City Marathon 42.2km, 21.1km and the 10km race.

The JHAC, established in 1904, is claimed to be one of the oldest running clubs in SA. On March 9, it hosted a media launch at Thaba Eco Hotel, Johannesburg South, announcing the Johannesburg City Marathon Race and marathon rebranding.

JHAC has successfully hosted 77 Jackie Gibson Marathons and now hosts its first Johannesburg City Marathon. The club has renamed and rebranded the marathon with hopes of contending for world major status.

For the marathon to be in contention, it needs to run through the city and have the word “city” in its name.

The club has existed for 120 years and is proud of the steps taken and its inclusivity. The group trains for the Comrades, and some people joyfully participate in 10km races.

The marathon is on March 24. The starting point is at Klipriviersberg Recreation Centre, Kibler Park. The 42.2km and 21.1km events will start at 05:30, and 10km will start at 07:00. Walkers are also welcome on the half-marathon only.

The 21.1km and 42.2km cut-off times will be strictly at noon. All finishers within the cut-off will receive a medal.
