5 distinctions for Thiara Deokaran

Through all the hardships she endured in the past, Thiara made it through.

Just five months after the sentencing of the murderers of Thiara Deokaran’s mother, she received the greatest accolades at Abbotts College.

Thiara is the best-performing learner at her school for the Class of 2023 and bagged five distinctions. She obtained distinctions in business studies, history, English, life orientation and tourism.

“It was about 23:30 on January 17 when I received my results. I was shocked. I couldn’t think it was real. The examinations were very challenging and receiving these results is a great thing for me. Even now, I couldn’t process it,” she said.

On working hard to be a top learner, Thiara said that getting to university pushed her to study hard.

“Our universities are very competitive. Knowing how to study for examinations helps a lot. “I would like to study information systems or finance. I will choose between the two. I hope to study at the University of the Witwatersrand. If not, I will opt for the University of Johannesburg or University of Pretoria,” she noted.

She said what happened to her and her family in 2021, regarding the murder of her mother Babita Deokaran, served as a motivation to do better.

“Bad things happen in life. Working hard makes you stronger and makes you push hard,” she said.

In advising the Class of 2024, she said they must study hard, as the workload sometimes overwhelms them.
“Start now to study, complete your assignments and do a lot when you have time because there will be a lot of work during exam time,” she said.

Thiara said her relationship with her fellow learners is still good.

“We were in contact even during the holidays and helped one another where we could. I will try to keep these relationships, although we know people take different paths,” noted Thiara.
