Couple dies in Booysens informal settlement fire
Over 1 000 shacks burnt down in January 2021 in the same area.
A fire at the Booysens informal settlement in the early hours of October 21 claimed two lives and destroyed 37 shacks.
According to witnesses, the fire claimed the lives of a couple inside one shack.
The MMC for Human Settlements in the City of Johannesburg (CoJ), Anthea Leitch, extends her condolences to the friends and family of the victims and calls on residents in settlements like these to take extra precautions as they are in a high-risk category for fire.
This same settlement experienced the destruction of over 1 000 shacks in January 2021.
The CoJ currently has over 300 informal settlements, with more added as the constant influx of migration continues.
The city’s Disaster Management Services were on the scene and are currently working on a way forward.
