MMC kicks off oversight visits with three JDA Projects

Councillor Eunice Mgcina undertook an oversight visit to check progress on capital development project with the Turffontein Clinic Cllr Mgcina went to oversee.

The Joburg MMC for Development Planning, Clr Eunice Mgcina, undertook oversight visits to three projects by the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA).

The JDA is the infrastructure development arm of the City of Johannesburg. The agency has managed over 1 300 capital expenditure projects in Johannesburg.

This oversight visit took place on July 6 to check on the progress of capital development projects. These projects are the Kaalfontein Multipurpose Centre, the Turffontein Clinic, and the Diepsloot Public Environment Upgrade (PEU).

Infrastructure development and refurbishment is one of eleven mayoral priorities for a better Joburg.
Mgcina, accompanied by the JDA project implementation team, braved the cold to work towards this mayoral priority.

Her oversight tour kick-started in Midrand, Region A, to view the construction at the Kaalfontein Multipurpose Centre, aimed at benefiting the community.

The first phase entails the construction of the platforms, perimeter fence, service reticulations (water, sanitation, stormwater, electrical power) and the construction of a guardhouse. Phase two of the project will entail constructing the main building works.

Following the completion of phase two, the Kaalfontein Multipurpose Centre development will comprise a new double-storey administration and office building, community hall, and sports facilities which include a gymnasium, pool, library, offices, hall and soccer fields.

The second stop saw the MMC travel to Diepsloot to see the Diepsloot Public Environment Upgrade (PEU) intended to promote pedestrian mobility and connectivity.

The project entails paving upgrades, creating new sidewalks, upgrading intersections, traffic accommodation, bins and bollards, landscaping and street furniture.

Phase one of the Diepsloot PEU, now complete, entailed the extension of a pedestrian network, along the Government Precinct Node, to the north and Peach Road, to the west, as well as the extension of the Wetland Promenade to the future pedestrian bridge.

Phase two of the project, which is currently ongoing, entails the upgrading of a 1.1km route along JB Marks, the upgrading of a 2.15km route along Percy Qoboza, Gateside Avenue and Peach Road, and the extension of School Road to create a grid network.

The MMC’s final stop was south of Johannesburg where the JDA is implementing the two-storey, 1 870m² Turffontein Clinic. The clinic aims to provide improved healthcare for the communities of Turffontein, Rosettenville, Kenilworth and the neighbouring suburbs in Johannesburg south.

Once completed, the clinic will be equipped with a 120-seat waiting area, 18 consulting rooms, an emergency and stabilisation unit, a mother and child section, counselling rooms, a group room for ARV treatment and TB therapy, a testing facility and antenatal care. The clinic will also have an isolation room, a central pharmacy, social work counselling rooms and ablution facilities.

Mgcina noted, “We are delighted about the progress despite the challenges. Today, we have committed that when the deadline for the delivery of these projects arrives, they will be ready to be handed to the community.”

Mgcina added they have also committed to the residents and the councillors they have met in these areas that they will complete these projects, and the community will be pleased to receive the developments set out in their IDPs.
