Ward 57 celebrates the youth of today

Various stakeholders participated in the June 16 commemoration.

Ward 57 commemorated June 16 by celebrating the youth at Corinthians FC in La Rochelle.

Councillor Faeeza Chame said Nelson Mandela declared June 16 Youth Day, an official public holiday since 1994.

“Hector Pieterson, the schoolboy the police killed in the Soweto uprising protest that day, symbolises the consequences of oppression.

“As part of this year’s celebration, we teamed up with various stakeholders, including the City Social Development, Mzansi FM, JMPD, SAPS, CPF, Metro Kids, and Johannesburg Association Of the Blind.

“Various soccer legends graced us with their presence, as well as bikers from organisations around Gauteng. The community could sell their goods, and the visitors could shop until they dropped at the stalls.

“Our focus and highlight of the day is our youth. I am encouraging our youth to never give up. No matter how hard it looks on the outside, there is still hope for South Africa. They are our future leaders.

“The current national unemployment rate in the first quarter of 2023 is at 32.9% and is among the highest in the world. According to the quarterly labour force survey (QLFS), this is an increase of 0.2% compared to the fourth quarter of 2022. Education is your door to success,” Chame said.
