Mrs. SA Semi-finalist Nomsa speaks about power of personal branding

Mophuting, a Kibler Park resident, was inspired to join Mrs South Africa 2023 because she believed the experience would change her life and the lives of those who look to her for inspiration and motivation.

Nomsa Mophuting, a contestant for Mrs South Africa 2023, had a whirlwind five months since she joined the renowned programme for women’s empowerment and was announced a semi-finalist.

Mophuting, a Kibler Park resident, was inspired to join Mrs South Africa because she believed the experience would change her life and the lives of those who look to her for inspiration and motivation.

She believed she could live her purpose and be her best self through this platform. She also wanted to project herself as the strong, independent woman she is – a voice for change.

Since entering, she took part in a series of empowering workshops from leading experts on topics ranging from health and fitness to building financial acumen. One of her greatest lessons has been the power and importance of personal branding in achieving her aspirations.

Greatness Within

For Mophuting, personal branding is how you want people to perceive you.

“It is defining and promoting what you stand for as an individual.”

To guide her personal branding evolution, Mophuting and the other Mrs South Africa semi-finalists received professional coaching from #PRGuru Madelain Roscher, the founder and CEO of award-winning marketing-communications agency PR Worx.

Roscher notes a strong and distinctive brand is one of the most powerful weapons in an individual’s arsenal, no matter their unique goals.

“A brand is not a logo. It is about people’s experience of you and your reputation. In a noisy world, a strong personal brand allows individuals to stand out by consistently articulating and leveraging their unique value proposition.

“By consistently communicating who you are, your values, and your areas of knowledge or expertise to others, you can get a significant leg up in your career or business. By sharing who you are and building your personal brand, you can increase your public visibility, establish stronger and more authentic relationships with others, and expand your influence to your benefit,” said Roscher.

With this in mind, personal branding has been one of Mophuting’s focus areas as she seeks to build her profile and use her voice to effect positive change.

For example, some of her achievements since joining Mrs South Africa are registering her own NPO, hosting a youth career expo, being an MC at events and she received invitations to speak at events.

“These achievements have proven that I possess greatness within and are a testament that I have been sitting with so much potential.

“The lessons I gained from personal branding have given me the courage to step out and pursue my dreams. I always wanted to have my own NPO and give back to underprivileged communities but did not know where to start or whom to speak to. I came a long way, thanks to the lessons learnt about personal branding,” said Mophuting.

Top three branding tips from South Africa’s #PRGuru

As advice to others seeking to build their personal brands, Roscher offers her top three branding tips:

1. Take inventory: Before communicating your brand to others, first reflect and define your brand and what you would like to communicate or how you would like others to see you.

2. Make yourself findable: Choose social media channels best suited to your brand and brand goals, and begin actively updating and engaging on your profiles to boost your visibility.

3. Donate your expertise to a cause: This would allow you to enjoy the heart-warming joy of giving back and to develop a more visible platform for good.
