Rand Water’s Eikenhof pump station back on full load

Eikenhof pump station operating at full capacity - Johannesburg Water infrastructure steadily recovering.

Pumping at Rand Water’s Eikenhof pump station is now operating at full capacity after pumping resumed on Thursday afternoon June 8. Meanwhile, Johannesburg. Water’s infrastructure has begun making a steady recovery.

This follows the power outage at City Power’s Orlando power station that occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning, which subsequently affected Rand Water’s Eikenhof pump station.

According to the external communications officer at Johannesburg Water, Nolwazi Dhlamini, customers are advised, however, that once the Eikenhof system recovers, it will take time for the affected Johannesburg Water reservoirs and towers to fully stabilise. Customers in areas supplied by a direct feed, now have water restored.

“Johannesburg Water continues to closely observe the reservoirs and towers affected by the outage. As a mitigating factor, the entity is also supplying alternative water to residents and critical customers such as hospitals, clinics, and schools,” said Ngcobo.

Customers are urged to reduce consumption for critical needs during this period.

There is no estimated time for the system to fully recover at this stage and Johannesburg Water continues to observe the systems.

“The outlets of several reservoirs have been isolated (closed) to reduce the recovery period. Pumps to specific towers are also isolated, as reservoir levels are too low. We will provide further updates as the situation improves,” added Ngcobo.

Update on critically impacted Johannesburg Water towers and reservoirs:

1. Crown Gardens reservoir and tower: reservoir outlet has been isolated. The tower is empty.

2. Brixton reservoir and tower: outlet closed. The tower is empty.

3. Honeydew reservoir and tower: Both systems are critically low to empty.
