Department of Agriculture helps unemployed women in Ormonde View

The Ormonde View organisation creates jobs in its community for the community.

The Sisonke Women Initiative Co-Operation was established in 2018 by the unemployed women in Ormonde View. The main aim was to create jobs for everyone within the community.

They have projects like gardening, poultry, tea production, sewing, waste management (collect tins and plastic baffles) and beading to sustain themselves while combating unemployment.

“Our wish is that the government should include these curriculums and instil what the elderly taught us to do in vocational subjects. Our children will learn to do things for themselves. Agricultural subjects must be implemented in the school. We would also appreciate it if businesses or residents in the area could support us by buying products or sponsoring us.

The departments of agriculture, land reform and rural development, social development and Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo can assist and open their door for us,” said the project co-ordinator, Luckie Dube.

Makoe Maud, Gugu Luthuli and Tlaki Phutiagae were happy to be trained and receive gardening tools.

“We thank the Department of Agriculture for offering us training skills and providing tools and seeds to us. We encourage the department to train more women. We thank Nasrec Expo Centre for providing us with a venue for the training. We also thank Clr Sekhu Matsobane for assisting and supporting us,” said team leader Martha Baleni.
