South Hills youth attend self-defence classes

To tackle bullying at schools and safety issues in local streets, Captain Hennie Bouwern the visited South Hills community to teach them about tips to defend themselves.

South Hills residents participated in self-defence training taught by Captain Hennie Bouwer of the provincial SAPS at the South Hills Recreation Centre on March 4.

He covered topics like hijacking, kidnapping, securing your home, parking at the mall, and safety while driving and gave emergency preparedness advice.

According to Bouwer, the visit was to empower everyone within the community and tackle crime issues and give tips on how to stay safe.

“The purpose of the visit was to specifically teach school learners about bullying at schools and safety in the streets. Being able to defend yourself against an assailant and knowing when and how to employ the abilities that a master has taught you is comforting,” said Bouwer.

He said he hosts these classes three times a year to nurture previously passed skills and pass the most recent skills to the community.

“It is important to involve youngsters in most of the training that we do because it is known that the youth is the future and aspiring leaders. It is also important to give them as many opportunities as we can so they can unleash their potential and gain more confidence,” Bouwer explained.
