Progress in south’s power outages

Progress has been made to pump out water from the underground tunnels which affect the power supply to the Moffat substation.

The substation has been down since November 26 following an attempted cable theft.

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena said at least five medium voltage cables were seriously damaged after they were set alight and cut during an attempt to steal them.

“Teams have worked around the clock to pump out the water from the tunnel. Most of the water has been pumped out and parallel work has started to do the joints on the five cables underground.

“We are hoping to complete the jointing later in the evening after which tests will be done before we restore power, if all goes according to plan. “Customers that remain without power include those in Thulisa Park, Steeledale, Moffat View, and Elandspark, among others. We apologise for the inconvenience caused by this prolonged outage,” he said.
