Memorial for the late Babita Deokaran in Mondeor

Members of the public are invited, however, you need to RSVP.

Exactly a year after her assassination, the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation will pay homage to corruption fighter and a critical witness for the Special Investigating Unit case, Babita Deokaran, by hosting a memorial rally on August 23 from 18:00 at Mondeor Baptist Church, corner Columbine Avenue and Ashden Road.

Deokaran was gunned down outside her Johannesburg South home after dropping off her child at school.

According to the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation, a News24 investigation has revealed how Deokaran, a senior official in the provincial health department’s finance unit, flagged several dubious payments from the Thembisa Hospital to various contractors. It is alleged that Chief Financial Officer, Lerato Madyo, failed to act on a plea by Deokaran weeks before she was murdered.

Guests will, after the memorial, gather outside Deokaran’s home where a short candlelight vigil will take place.
