Brackendowns SAPS warns women of romance scams after R500k fraud case

Brackendowns SAPS have raised concern of a rise in romance scams targeting unsuspecting women who are looking for love using social media.

Brackendowns SAPS cautions women of romance scams, which are notably on the rise in their policing precinct.

Unsuspecting women who are looking for love on social media platforms continue to be scammed by ‘potential lovers’ [scammers] who, in turn, swindle them off their money.

The station warns users of online dating sites, especially women, to be vigilant following reported incidents of crimes related to internet dating.

Sergeant Lindile Moloi of Brackendowns SAPS advised women to do thorough research before considering giving out money to these online scammers.

“We recently registered a case of a woman who was also victimised by a scammer who made her take up a loan of R500 000, among several other cases we’ve captured. Several cases have been opened. By the time these women realise they were being scammed, it’ll be too late,” she said.
