Lenasia warehouse raid nets suspect (29)

A joint operation by law enforcement agencies struck a blow against counterfeit goods and illegal trade. A suspect (29) now faces charges under the Customs and Excise Act and the Counterfeit Goods Act after a raid on a Lenasia warehouse.

Members from the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation Unit, the JMPD, Ekurhuleni metro, and the Johannesburg Flying Squad led a comprehensive operation at BBS Deco Park in Lenasia on November 13, leading to the arrest of a 29-year-old suspect.

Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Wendy Nkabi said the suspect will appear before the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court and face charges related to the Contravention of Customs and Excise Act and the Counterfeit Goods Act.

“The operation was initiated based on intelligence received about a warehouse in Lenasia where individuals were suspected of repacking liquor, raising concerns about potential counterfeit goods. Upon arrival at the warehouse, law enforcement officers encountered various brands of alcohol. The suspect, initially unavailable and claiming to be present only on Wednesday, was eventually located within the premises and promptly placed under arrest.

“A meticulous search of the warehouse revealed 197 cases of liquor, estimated to have a street value of R1.5m. The seized goods are believed to be part of an illicit operation involving the production or distribution of counterfeit alcohol, a matter of significant concern for public health and the economy.

“The suspect is scheduled to appear in court on November 22 for a formal bail application. This court appearance will shed further light on the charges levied against him and the details of the alleged infractions,” said Nkabi.
