Illegal firearms seized during Operation Shanela in Ekurhuleni

To combat crime in the Ekurhuleni district, various law enforcement entities gathered and took Operation Shanela to the local streets. Over 300 offenders were apprehended for various crimes.

The cooperative operations of SAPS members, EMPD, Gauteng Traffic, CPF, Home Affairs and other law enforcement agencies have resulted in good outcomes in an effort to reduce the presence of various crimes in communities.

Eight unlicensed liquor stores were closed, and 357 suspects were detained.

While carrying out their duties throughout the district, law enforcement authorities apprehended two individuals during the integrated Operation Shanela for possession of three unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

Two suspects were arrested after law enforcers went to a car wash and noticed a man hiding something in one of the cars. The police immediately approached the car and searched it. They discovered two AK47 rifles, a pistol and ammunition.

During the operation on Saturday, detectives in the district policing precincts apprehended 277 suspects, including 129 for contact crimes, 21 for contact-related crimes, five for property crimes, two for interfering with vital infrastructure, five for crimes requiring police action and 34 for GBV issues.

Major General Anna Sithole, the commissioner of Ekurhuleni District, praised the teams’ efforts to combat the spread of illegal firearms in the district and lower crime rates.
