Gauteng police seize rifles and ammunition linked to N12 CIT heist

The Gauteng SAPS found a weapons cache and crucial evidence connected to the N12 cash-in-transit heist.

Gauteng police seized two rifles and ammunition they suspect are linked to the N12 cash-in-transit (CIT) heist near Southgate, Johannesburg, close to Xavier, on October 7.

The intelligence-driven police operation to trace the suspects linked to the CIT led the police to a backroom in Mapetla, Soweto.

According to SAPS national spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, at the address, the police forced open a backroom and seized two rifles, including an AK-47, magazines, and 71 rounds of ammunition.

“These rifles were taken in for ballistics testing to determine their linkage to other CITs and associated robberies. During the operation, police seized balaclavas, handcuffs, beanies, protective shoes, and cash receipt slips of bank deposits.

“Police investigations and the tracing of suspects, believed to be a group of 15 to 20, continues. The units involved include the Anti-Gang Unit, Organised Crime Investigations and Gauteng Highway Patrol.

“We again remind the public that picking up money from CIT crime scenes is a crime, and those found doing so can be charged with theft and defeating the ends of justice,” said Mathe.
