Mulbarton suicidal stepmom accused of drowning toddler appears in court

The 23-year-old woman allegedly drowned her three-year-old stepdaughter in a bathtub and attempted suicide by slitting her wrists.

Amber Hughes appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on February 21 on murder charges.

The Glenvista CPF received a report about a three-year-old girl who had been found seriously injured in Mulbarton on January 27. CPF members and security firms such as FOX Security, CPS, Reaper Tactical, and ambulances rushed to the scene.

According to Mondeor CPF spokesperson Mike Fontes, the girl was discovered with a faint pulse but was otherwise unresponsive.

“The woman was charged with murder and detained,” said Fontes.

Amber first appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on February 2 and requested bail, which was denied.

The case was postponed to March 29 due to further investigation by the State.
