98th birthday: Brackenhurst senior’s celebration of life

Even at 98, senior Petro Joubert is somewhat tech savvy and is able to keep up with the times. She reflects on her many beautiful years as she celebrates her 98th birthday.

In just two years from now, senior Petro Joubert’s birthday will be the centenary of her birth.

Even at 98, Petro is still a ‘do it yourself’ kind of person; she is a very creative and artistic person who enjoyed a lot of sewing in her years and still works on her sewing machine.

She is a lover of Mother Nature and enjoys spending time in her garden and has a very good knowledge of plants.

Wood carving, a type of specialised hobby where one sculpts wood into beautiful designs is also one of her many great talents. She had made close to 25 designs, with some designs for her grandchildren. Petro has three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Petro, who has spent her life working hard and supporting her family, is best described as an enthusiastic, innovative and strong-minded person who has a wealth of history and knowledge.

Walking down memory lane, she said she has many reasons to cherish her life.

“My faith keeps me going, and my positivity draws other people to me. You get people that easily give up on life and my advice is that people shouldn’t easily give in to situations or anything that weighs them down. The biggest treasure that God ever gave me was my child,” said Petro.

In her earlier years, Petro spent much of her young life in Johannesburg and mostly spent time travelling and exploring her passions. About 60 years ago, she was in Europe for a year to travel and work. She came back with knowledge about the world. She later visited Israel.

Her only daughter, Renza Lourens, 72, reiterated that her mother is a positive person who mostly spent her years living life and putting a smile on the lives of others.

She said her mother played hockey, did judo and enjoyed flower arrangements. Before retiring she worked in the administrative sector. She also played the guitar and also played it at her church.
