Booysens SAPS meets with second-hand goods dealers

The meeting aimed to get more co-operation from second-hand goods dealers to help eradicate high crime levels.

The Booysens SAPS met with second-hand goods dealers who operate in Johannesburg south on August 14.

The dealers included panel beating businesses, pawn shop owners, tyre companies and scrap metal recyclers.

The agenda addressed the non-compliance to the conditions stated in the certificates in terms of the Second-Hand Goods Act, 2009 (Act No 6 of 2009), crime generated from second-hand goods incidents and input by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), City of Johannesburg, Vehicle Crime Investigations Unit, detectives and the infrastructure unit.

The second-hand dealers received documentation describing what actions law enforcement would take if a contravention was identified, and an acceptable explanation for the contravention was not provided by the second-hand goods dealers or recyclers.

Second-hand dealer officer Sergeant Mike Mongwe said: “We hope the second-hand dealers will continue to co-operate with us to help curb crime in the area.”
