A rising star in the world of drag racing

Dezelle Naude’s journey as a drag racer exemplifies determination, passion, and the pursuit of dreams.

At a young age, Dezelle Naude (19) found her ‘need for speed’.

The former learner at Hoërskool Marais Viljoen found inspiration in her parents, also drag racers. Because of her deep love for cars, she saw her dream to be a drag racer become a reality. Her passion for the car world and the thrill of speed drew her to the sport, and she has been a drag racer for almost 18 months.

Racing or nothing

Naude’s journey in drag racing began as a racing enthusiast and later transitioned to track racing and participating in events.

On April 29, she achieved her goal by setting a world record for the fastest hybrid Audi S3.

For her, the best part of drag racing is not just the racing itself but the camaraderie she shares with fellow racers.
Working on her car with her father and enjoying the company of the QT Performance family at events bring her immense joy.

“As a young female drag racer in a male-dominated sport, I face challenges in earning respect from other racers. However, through hard work, determination, and standing my ground, I proved my skills and talent on the track,” the racer said.

Balancing her education and racing career is a priority because Naude understands the importance of responsibilities and effective time management in pursuing her passion for racing while excelling academically.

Naude has achieved remarkable milestones on her drag racing journey. The nights spent prepping her car at QT Performance and featuring in the renowned Speed and Sound magazine left a lasting impression on her.

Dezelle Naude is ready for a bright future as a racer.

On April 29, she achieved her primary goal by setting a world record for the fastest hybrid Audi S3. The emotional impact of this accomplishment brought tears of joy to her eyes.

“In the racing world, I find inspiration in my parents, who push me to achieve my goals. They are with me every step of the way.”

Her role models, Luey and Tina Reddy, inspire her to improve and support her on her racing journey.

“I am nothing without the entire QT team, and I am thankful for their unwavering support,” said Naude.

Mental preparation for races includes a pep talk and a prayer, while physical readiness involves fuelling up with a can of Red Bull and slipping into her racing shoes.

She has encountered many stereotypes and prejudices from older females in the racing world. However, her approach is to ignore the hate and not take it personally.

“It is important to surround yourself with supportive individuals who celebrate success.”

Looking ahead, she aims to inspire others to pursue racing and challenge societal opinions. Her aspirations include maintaining her record as the fastest hybrid Audi S3 in the world and turning her car into a consistent nine-second performer.

“What many may not realise about drag racing is that it demands commitment, passion, and hard work. It goes beyond simply showing up at events. It requires dedication to ensure the car is in optimal condition and well-prepared for race days,” she explained.

Her advice to young females wanting a career in motorsport is to believe in themselves, have confidence, and not let fear hinder their dreams. She believes women can be strong competitors and defy the stereotype of motorsport as a male-dominated field.

This and that

Naude was born in Sunward Park Hospital on August 26, 2004. As her family’s only child, she was blessed with undivided attention and unconditional love.

Dezelle Naude has been a drag racer for just less than 18 months.

Her fondest childhood memories concern two significant encounters – meeting her favourite rugby player, Patrick Lambie, and having the privilege of meeting the Blue Bulls team, including legends like Victor Matfield and Morne Steyn.

“Another cherished memory involves waffle and ice cream dates with my parents, a simple yet delightful tradition,” she said.

She attended Laerskool President Steyn and matriculated from Hoërskool Marais Viljoen.

Naude is studying aeronautical engineering at the University of Potchefstroom and loves every minute of it.

Her life motto reflects her resilience and determination. She believes in having the courage to let go of things beyond her control and never giving up on oneself, even in the face of adversity. She acknowledges that life presents many challenges, but the ability to rise after falling defines true strength.

In her personal life, she is her own role model, rejecting the notion of comparing herself to others.

“I always strive to be courageous, loving and kind.”

She has set her sights on becoming her own motivation and inspiration.

In her free time, she plays hockey to fuel her competitive spirit.

She also cherishes moments spent with her family and friends, relishing the warmth of their company. At home, she finds solace in her loyal pitbull, Hudson.
