Alberton man wins over R33m in Powerball Jackpot

Alberton has its newest lucky lottery multi-millionaire, a man in his 50s who works in the finance sector.

Ithuba, the operator of the National Lottery, is excited to add the latest multi-millionaire to their list of jackpot winners.

This is after an Alberton player finally came forward to claim R33 670 044.67 in the PowerBall draw number 1396 that took place on April 11.

The winner, who bought his ticket at SPAR in Alberton, is a man in his 50s who works in the finance sector. When asked what he plans to do now that he has won the PowerBall jackpot, he said he will continue to work and not retire because he wants to continue building a legacy for his family.

Meanwhile, a Capitec player won R8 693 189,40 in the PowerBall jackpot from April 18, draw number 1398.

According to Ithuba, all players who win via a banking app are notified by their respective banks. The winner is yet to come forward and claim their winnings.

“We congratulate our latest multi-millionaire and wish him well with his plans for the future. Ithuba would also like to reiterate that we are mandated, as per our license requirement, to maintain the anonymity of all our winners,” said the Ithuba CEO, Charmaine Mabuza.

Lebogang Mokoena, Ithuba’s corporate affairs specialist, said: “To stand a chance to be the next lucky multi-millionaire, play PowerBall and PowerBall PLUS for total estimated PowerBall and PowerBall PLUS jackpots at R33m on April 21. PowerBall is at an estimated R6m and PowerBall PLUS is at an estimated R27m.”

Players must be 18 years and older. All National Lottery winnings are tax-free.

‘One ticket can change your life’

Ithuba encourages players to check their tickets and claim the winnings. Tickets are valid for 365 days from the date of the draw.

Michelle van Trotsenburg, the head of marketing corporate affairs, told the Alberton Record that all winnings get allocated to the National Lottery distribution fund.

“If the winnings are not claimed within 365 days, the unclaimed winnings are used for good causes distributed by the National Lotteries Commission. All winners over R50 000 receive free financial and trauma counselling to assist them in managing their winnings. All winnings are tax-free,” she explained.

Van Trotsenburg said every day, South Africans 18 and older have a chance to win and their contributions go to helping others change their circumstances.

“It has already changed the lives of many others – street vendors, miners, boilermakers and retirees are just a few examples. As the winner of the R126m PowerBall jackpot said, ‘I will continue to play, as it is not about the money, but it is for the proceeds that go to charity from the money spent on buying tickets’,” she said.
