Ms Deaf International 2022 rides to restore hearing loss

Meyersdal’s Megan Holmes is taking part in a charity run in order to serve the needs of children with severe to profound hearing loss.

Meyersdal’s Ms Deaf International 2022 Megan Holmes is passionate about improving the deaf community’s communication and quality of life.

She has decided to raise funds for an NPO, Hear Us, by participating in the TotalSports Two Oceans Half Marathon.

To date, the avid cyclist and mother of one has raised at least R1 150 towards this good cause.

This organisation, according to Megan, does amazing work – a cause that is close to her heart.

“Hear Us is an NPO committed to children with severe to profound hearing loss to afford a cochlear implant. Your donation can change someone’s life forever by obtaining access to the wonderful world of sound. If you can, please donate to the fundraising project on GivenGain,” said Megan.

In an interview with the Alberton Record, she said she decided to take part in the charity-run TotalSports Two Ocean Half Marathon because of her daughter.

“She is a bilateral cochlear implantee, which means she received cochlear implants in both ears and it was very expensive. I watched her growing up through trial and error and in the end, she is doing very well. She is now seven years old and can hear and speak well,” she explained.

A cochlear implant provides better benefits to children and can also provide access to spoken language, maximising their language potential.

“I thought about children from disadvantaged backgrounds that cannot afford to get a cochlear implant. I wanted to assist to raise funds for them to also access the world of sound.

“Another reason I decided to take part is that I wanted to get out of my comfort zone and motivate myself to do different training and it is for my mental health,” Megan said.

As an ‘empowering initiative’, Megan said she would like to inspire others to do the same.

The race will be in Cape Town on April 16.
