Online scammers sending emails, WhatsApp messages pretending to be JRA CFO

Verify all the information received on emails and WhatsApp messages.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) warns members of the public about online scammers who have been sending emails and WhatsApp messages to unsuspecting subjects and pretending to be the Entity’s Chief Financial Officer, Makgopong Thindisa.

The message, be it sent via email or WhatsApp, will ask you to provide the senders with your personal WhatsApp number or email address so that they can send you an urgent task that they need you to assist them with. The messages are sent through the following platforms, ronfelton105@gmail.com or 068 394 2841.

Investigations are currently underway to establish the people and reasons behind this hoax and updates and outcomes of the investigations will be communicated in due course.

Should you receive such messages, do not open them and rather delete the messages as opening them can release a computer virus to your computer or mobile phone. Although we are not sure at this time, we also suspect that opening the messages can grant the perpetrators access to your bank accounts.

Remember this is important

• Opening the messages can release a computer virus to your computer or mobile phone.

• Opening the messages can grant the perpetrators access to your bank accounts partly because the WhatsApp number you’ll access the message and reply to the message from could be the same number you use for cell phone banking.
