Joburg mayor welcome the Department of Health’s decision on Covid-19

The Johannesburg Mayor Mpho Phalatse has welcomed the repeal of the final Covid-19 regulations. She has said that Johannesburg can now start returning to pre-pandemic levels of visitors and tourism.

The Johannesburg Mayor Mpho Phalatse said they welcomed the decision by the Department of Health to repeal regulations relating to Covid-19.

Annually, Johannesburg hosts hundreds of major events such as conferences, exhibitions, festivals and sporting tournaments that attract millions of visitors.

These events play a significant role in boosting Johannesburg’s image as a tourism and investment destination. It also creates thousands of short-term and permanent jobs.

“The decision to repeal the final regulations will go a long way in reinvigorating Johannesburg’s economic activity,” said Phalatse.

“Johannesburg attracted five million visitors annually before the Covid-19 pandemic. We want to see the city return to these levels and even exceed this number over the medium-term.”Phalatse also mentioned that even though the rescission of regulations is welcomed, one must remember that Covid-19 still remains in the country.

“We call on all Johannesburg residents to self-police, maintain good hygiene and be vigilant to the possibility of infection.”

Phalatse ensured that she will continue to engage with representatives from Foreign Missions. She will continue to use this opportunity to promote Johannesburg’s ability to host large-scale conferences and impress upon them the work they are doing to build a city which is business-friendly, safe and secure.

“Johannesburg is open for business and entertainment; and as a multi-party government, we are ready to welcome business and leisure visitors to the country’s economic capital,” she concluded.
