Officer takes the stand in Rosettenville shooting case

Four months after the shooting the matter is still on trial.

The investigating officer in the case of the Rosettenville shooting took the witness stand on June 7 as the bail hearing is nearing its end.

Ten suspects are charged with murder, attempted murder and being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The court appearance was to allow for the investigating officer’s affidavit to be sorted out for a final decision regarding bail.

The magistrate asked the officer to describe the property that was used as a safe house by the suspects.
The officer verified there are no houses on the premises but rooms that are rented out.

The officer told the court today that the addresses given by some of the suspects don’t exist, which may indicate that they might attempt to evade court proceedings should they be granted bail.

The officer also told the court since the 10 suspects were arrested, no other cash in transit heists occurred in the province.

The defence asked the officer if there were any chances that the scene was contaminated, referring to the video that did the rounds on social media of Police Minister Bheki Cele on the scene.

With his full assurance, the officer said the scene was cordoned off as soon as the first officers arrived on the scene.

With a link still to be made between the crime scene and the 10 suspects, the officer blamed it on a backlog at the forensic lab that led the defence to repeat that there is no evidence as to why his clients are being prosecuted.

The case has been postponed to June 20, which will be the last postponement as stipulated by the magistrate.
