WATCH: Operation O Kae Molao cracks the whip in Moffat View

Lt Gen Elias Mawela urged the community to continue working with the police to curb crime.

Gauteng provincial commissioner Lt-Gen Elias Mawela together with the Johannesburg District Commissioner Major General Max Masha led a multi-disciplinary crime-prevention operation in Moffat View, on May 19.

Joined by senior management of the SAPS and other law-enforcement agencies, Operation O Kae Molao, set out to make the police’s presence known throughout the city.

O Kae Molao which translates to ‘where’s the law’, is aimed at stamping the authority of the state and assisting the local police station with the reduction of crime.

According to the SAPS spokesperson in Gauteng, Brigadier Brenda Muridili a Volkswagen Polo has been recovered by the police during the operation after it was reported stolen in Tsakane, Ekurhuleni in August 2021.

Stop and search is currently being conducted during the multi-disciplinary O kaeMolao operation in Gauteng.

The objectives of the operation are to identify hijacked vehicles, business robberies, house robberies and the possession of stolen goods.

Speaking to the COURIER, Lt Gen Elias Mawela said this was another instalment of their anti-crime campaign.

“We started with phase one where the detectives went out to look for suspects and 899 wanted suspects are already behind bars. Our detectives are working with the courts. They have finalised 15 cases where 14 suspects appeared in our courts, and all criminals were convicted and sentenced. All in all, we managed to secure 137 years and two life sentences.

“The second phase, which is also taking place across the province, is underway. We decided to join Masha in Moffat View as it is known for all the wrong reasons, especially for hijackings and robberies.

“This area has a high volume of foreign nationals, some documented and some not. We also have the challenges of abandoned houses and some are illegally occupied, as owners have left. There are illegal activities going on in those houses and we will try to clean up the area,” he said.

There were successes in the roadblock as they impounded two vehicles – one positively identified as hijacked and the other had its identity tampered with.

Three shebeens were closed, two people were arrested for dagga and two homemade firearms were recovered with five rounds of R5 rifle ammunition. The people found with the firearms were arrested.
