Speaker of Council sends heartfelt condolences to the community of Ward 24

I have pleaded with the MMC of Public Safety to work closely with other law enforcement agencies - concillor Vasco da Gama.

Councillor Vasco da Gama, Speaker of Council, was saddened to hear the news about the level of crime that is escalating in Freedom Park, Ward 24.

This follows a shooting that took place where seven people were shot and five died at the Pikitup landfill site at Goukoppies.

He was joined by MMC Environment, Infrastructure and Services, Michael Sun, MMC Housing Mlungisi Mabaso and MMC Public Safety David Tembe as well as ward councillors from the surrounding wards, which include Ward 17 and 18 and officials on an oversight visit to address the incident that took place a week ago.

All councillors and officials were in shock to come across five dead bodies lying around on the Golden Highway, just opposite the BP garage in Freedom Park.

Speaker of Joburg sends his heartfelt condolences to the families and community

“I was informed that one of the five bodies was found inside a trench with digging tools which suggest that they were shot while digging for copper cable the previous night.

“This level of violent crime that we see in Joburg is very concerning. I have pleaded with the MMC of Public Safety to work closely with other law enforcement agencies to work closely together to ensure that they improve the safety of our residents,” said da Gama.

Congratulations to newly elected Chair of Chairs

City of Johannesburg Speaker of Council councillor Vasco da Gama also congratulated councillor Colleen Makhubele on her election as the Chair of Chairs.

In a very difficult and long day of the Joburg Council meeting held on January 18, Makhubele was duly elected as Chair of Chairs unopposed. Her responsibilities will be among others, to work closely with the Speaker, Whip of Council, and chair meetings of Chairpersons of Portfolio Committees.

“I am very excited and happy to have councillor Makhubele in the Legislature, with her vast corporate background. She will help strengthen the office of the Chairs of Chairs, inspire Chairpersons, review By-Laws, approve reports and perform effective oversight and scrutiny over the Executive,” said councillor da Gama.
