SAPS share car safety tips
Brackendowns SAPS shared a few awareness tips to help ensure your safety and the safety of your valuables while you are driving your car.
Parking your vehicle
• You should always lock your vehicle’s doors and keep the windows closed.
• Whenever you stop make sure your vehicle is locked even if you are only planning to be away for a minute.
• A gear lock is an affordable and effective anti-theft device.
• Where possible avoid stopping in remote areas and park your vehicle somewhere well lit.
Vary your route
• When driving vary the routes you take to work and back if possible and try to limit your travel at night.
• If a stranger wants to talk to you in your vehicle do not open your window wide.
• If you feel uneasy with a stranger approaching your vehicle drive away or press your hooter to draw attention to yourself.
In case of hijacking
• If you are the victim of a hijacking remember that your life is more important than your valuables.
• Do not reach for a purse or valuables and leave the vehicle without resisting, especially if they have a weapon.
• Do not ask any questions of your assailants and move away from the vehicle.
If you would like to report a crime contact your nearest police station who will assist you.
