Substation vandalism plunges parts of Turffontein in the dark

City Power technicians were dispatched to attend an outage affecting several areas around Turffontein on October 4.

According to City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena, the outage happened earlier Thursday after the Turffontein switching substation flashed after it was vandalised by an unknown person during an attempted theft of copper bars.

This affects the power supply to the following areas:

* Parts of Turffontein
* Reuven
* West Turffontein
* Stafford, and the surrounding areas.

“These areas will remain without electricity until the cleaning of the equipment and repairs are completed”

Unfortunately, City Power does not have an estimated restoration time at the moment.

“We apologise for the inconvenience caused to the residents affected,” he said.

Mangena added that they suspect that the unknown person who attempted to steal the copper bars may have been injured when the fire flashed.

“Some of his clothes and tools used in the commission of the crime were found on the scene at the substation. We have informed the police who are investigating,” said Mangena.

City Power appeals to the community to be on the lookout for any suspicious-looking individuals around its infrastructure and report them to the nearest police, to avoid unnecessary outages due to vandalism.
