Man sentenced for tampering with infrastructure

Positive conviction for Booysens SAPS officer.

A suspect was imprisoned for seven years for possession of suspected stolen railway equipment.

On April 12 at 11:45, the complainant, a reaction officer from Prasa, reported that he saw a suspicious person walking next to the railway line carrying a bag.

When the complainant approached the man and asked him to stop, the suspect dropped the bag and started to run away. The complainant gave chase and managed to catch the suspect.

When returning to the area where the bag was dropped, the complainant searched the bag and found railway equipment inside.

Booysens SAPS communications officer Capt Lorraine van Emmerik said the complainant then brought the suspect to the station, where he was detained.

The docket was given to WO Fanie van Staden to investigate.

“On October 13, the suspect appeared in court and was found guilty. He was sentenced to seven years’ direct imprisonment.

“Let this be a warning that if you are caught tampering with any form of infrastructure, you will have your day in court as your actions are a serious offence.

“The management of Booysens thanks van Staden for his dedication in the fight against crime,” she said.
