WATCH: The South water issue escalated to human rights

Certain parts of the South have been without water for five days after some residents did not have water for 10 days in July.

Some residents in the South have been without water since Thursday, August 26.

The shortage of water supply seems to become a recurring issue in the South areas. On July 12, the community took to the streets, barricading South Rand Road with rocks and burning tyres next to the Silver Ball after certain parts of the South did not have water for 10 days.

Joburg Water did not say for how long this would continue, but reminded residents that Johannesburg was still under level one water restrictions.

Some schools in the area have been closed until further notice due to the lack of water supply.

Messages have been circulating on social media advising parents there is still no water at schools and learners must stay at home until further notice:

Ward 56 and 57 councillors Michael Crichton and Faeeza Chame have escalated the water crisis to The South African Human Rights Commission.

“In a constitutional democracy such as South Africa, water is regarded as a Human Right. Section 27 (1) (b) states that everyone has the right to have access to sufficient water.”

“However, sadly this has not been consistently the case for the residents who are supplied by the South Hills Water tower, which supplies thousands of residents across the suburbs of South Hills, Linmeyer and Tulisa Park. Just over a month ago, these residents suffered a nine-day water outage from the 4th- 13th July 2021,” said in a statement.

Eleanor Mavimbela, Joburg Water’s spokesperson said this was due to the system experiencing severe pressure, with water demand consistently exceeding supply.

Rand Water has been forced to continue with 20% water restrictions.

These restrictions were implemented to allow for the recovery of its network system and will impact some parts of Johannesburg where residents will experience intermittent water supply.

Rand Water had a power supply issue at the Zekerbosh Purification Works which negatively impacted the pumping systems.

Residents are thus urged to save water where they can, to ease pressure on the system as much as possible.
