Two City Power contractors arrested for R6 000 bribery

City Power welcomes the arrest of two people accused of soliciting money from customers.

The two were arrested over the weekend in Bramley after collecting about R6 000 from a customer who they threatened with cut-offs.

It was discovered they are part of the contractors employed by City Power based at the Lenasia depot.

The two approached a customer, who owes City Power, threatening to cut the customer off unless the customer paid R6 000.

The customer notified the police and City Power Revenue Protection Unit who pounced on the two after reconnecting the customer and receiving the money.

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena said the two, who are linked to other incidents of soliciting bribes around Hursthill and Lenasia, were driving an unmarked car but wearing City Power work suits.

An internal investigation has been launched to find out how they got the City Power worksuits when they are not employees.

“A case of illegally tampering with municipal infrastructure, corruption and soliciting money has been opened at Sandringham Police Station. Another case was being opened by a customer against the two at Brixton.

“We commend the customers for doing the right thing and reporting these criminals. City Power has zero tolerance for corruption and appeals to customers to report any City Power employee or contractor who requests payment before doing their job.

Customers should report any corrupt activities to 10111 or City Power Risk Control Room numbers 011 490 7900/7911/7553,” said Mangena.
