First-ever awards recognise aspiring local artists

Up-and-coming music artists were excited to be recognised during the Inkunzi Awards held on June 5.

In recognising new talent, Ntwezinhle’s Nest hosted the Inkunzi Awards behind Booysens Hotel on June 5.

This was a platform for up-and-coming music artists to showcase their talents.

All nominees were carefully chosen following selections, which were held from January 25 to February 14.
Organiser Ntwezinhle Mchunu of Ntwezinhle’s Nest told the COURIER that this was after they noted that these artists were not considered.

“We now also train them on how to engage with people and ask them to vote for them. All artists seemed to be happy and other artists proudly said in the following year they will be the ones receiving these awards,” he said.

The winners of the Inkunzi awards are as follows:

Women’s category: Zinhle Zitha and Sinenhlanhla Nkosi.

Male category: Bonginkosi Xulu and Mshini.

Winning artist Zitha said, “When growing up I told my family that I would one day make them proud and bring home a trophy and this is the medal I was talking about. This award is very encouraging because at first I thought they were given to people who have been in the industry for many years.”

Organisers of the event have since committed to expanding and recognising veteran artists.
