Awards to honour up-and-coming artists

Ntwezinhle's Nest is going to host the Inkunzi Awards behind Booysens Hotel on June 5.

This will be the platform for up-and-coming music artists to showcase their talents. Motivational speakers are also welcome to give them hope.

Ntwezinhle Mchunu, one of the organisers, said they held the nomination period from January 25 to February 14 and they were surprised with the number of SMSes they received, which was 3 115. As these are inaugural awards, they nominated six female artists and seven male artists.

“The voting period started on March 1 and will run until April 4 at midnight. We will give the trophies to the winners on June 5 behind Booysens Hotel between 10am and 5pm.

“Ntwezinhle’s Nest noticed that there was no one who considered these artists. Since we used to promote for them, we now train them on how to engage with people and ask them to vote for them. They’re going to be proud that this event is about them. We are still in lockdown, but this project is keeping them busy, and they communicate with their supporters on social media,” explained Mchunu.

Ntwezinhle’s Nest was established in 2015. It works with up-and-coming traditional music artists. In 2016, they managed to get a funding of R30 000 from the Gauteng Department of Arts and Culture.
