Gauteng Traffic Police nab road traffic offenders

The Gauteng Traffic Police speed unit arrested 34 motorists for reportedly breaking road traffic laws and being found excessively speeding on major roads.

The arrests come after a high-speed operation was conducted throughout the week from March 15 to 22 on major routes.

At least over 40 motorists reported to be intoxicated were also arrested during the operations conducted over the long weekend. The detainees are expected to appear at various magistrates’ courts.

Sello Maremane of Gauteng Traffic Police said the most intoxicated driver was measured at 1.09 milligrams per 1 000 litres and was arrested and kept in Johannesburg custody.

“The speedsters were arrested on various major routes, such as the N4 freeway to Mpumalanga, N1 towards Limpopo, R21 and N14 among others. In one incident, a 48-year-old man was arrested after clocking 233 km/h on a 120 km/h zone on the N1 freeway,” he said.

Maremane said the speedsters were arrested on the spot and taken to various police stations where they were formally charged with reckless and negligent driving.

“Driver behaviour on our roads is a major concern to law enforcement authorities, which therefore calls for the strengthening of road safety education.

“Many of the speedsters arrested were found to be under the influence of alcohol, which poses a danger to the lives of road users,” he said.

He reiterated that they will intensify the patrol of freeways, streets and public places in clearly marked vehicles especially since the Easter season is approaching.
