At a time when most people’s livelihoods have been stripped away by the pandemic, staff of Brackenhurst Primary School has shared hope through dance.

The excitement was the order of the day, thanks to Melody Pheiffer who decided to get all teachers at the school to take part in a dance challenge.

The Jerusalema dance challenge, as formally known, has taken social media by storm and has had those taking part come up with their own moves. Teachers at the school were also in action, while observing social distancing.

The dance is said to bring much-needed positivity and joy during a time of crisis and citizens everywhere have created original moves and varied choreography. It is derived from Jerusalema, a song by South African DJ and record producer Master KG featuring South African vocalist Nomcebo Zikode.

Staff of Brackenhurst Primary School danced in tune to the gospel-influenced house song which has moved many in and out of the country.

Pheiffer, a teacher at the school, decided to get the staff involved and has also challenged other schools in Johannesburg South to take part.

“This was a way to bring us even closer and to create unity, joy and loads of laughter at a time when spirits are low. It will also be fun and inspirational for the kiddies to watch their teachers take to the dance floor.  “The school also had four teachers filming from different angles and a drone to record an aerial view,” she said.

Their dance video has since received positive response and great views on social media platforms after being shot on August 18.

Chandika Sing, the principal of the school, thanked and commended Pheiffer for her efforts to bring positivity through the dance challenge.

“It’s a team effort to show up and dance like we did. It comes at a time when we needed it the most. I believe this will also be an inspiration to our learners to have them see us in action even during a time like this,” she said.

Roleen Madongorera, also a teacher at the school, reiterated that the dance, which took them a few days to rehearse, was exciting.

“It was very nice, I enjoyed it since we were keeping fit while dancing to the lovely song and I wish we could do this again. We have never done something like this before. I think it will awaken people’s spirits and promote unity,” she said.
