WATCH: Lost bunny brings joy

Brat is still with Smah, waiting for the rightful owner to come forward.

When Simangaziwe ‘Smah’ Nkiwane from La Rochelle found a beautiful black and white buck bunny roaming near her gate on March 25, she didn’t know that one day she would put a smile on someone’s face.

“It was very cold and weak; I remember it was raining that day. I have been looking for the owners but unfortunately up to now I haven’t found them. I have named it Brat. When I found it, it weighed 1.8kg and now it weighs 2.3kg,” explained Smah.

After the COURIER published her plea for the owners to come forward, an 80-year-old pensioner from Turffontein came forward. However, she was not the owner of the bunny, but she wanted to give it a lovely warm home because her daughter, Karen Greyling (51), loves bunnies.

“This pensioner called me and we met last week; she came with her daughter, Karen. She told me she is not the owner, but she would love to keep the bunny. I told her I can’t give it to her as she is not the rightful owner.

“She cried, holding the bunny, and begged me to give it to her because it will be a blessing to her daughter. I was in a dilemma, she said she was prepared to even buy it. However, as I own 14 bunnies I thought let me give her one of my bunnies,” said Smah.

She gave her a doe but realised the doe will be lonely, so she decided to give her a buck as well.

“When she took them she cried tears of joy. She said she used have two bunnies. I saw the passion for bunnies in her eyes as she cuddled them. She phones me every day, telling me about their day-to-day activities. I’m glad I gave them two bunnies because they love them,” she noted.

Before these bunnies, Smah had a buck and she lost it. A local lady told her she saw her bunny being carried by boys towards Glenesk.

“Luckily, I found my bunny. It was kept safe by some guy and he was generous enough to sell me a doe, which I called Angel. Angel got pregnant and I had a few litters. It takes 31 days for a rabbit to get pregnant, so it won’t be long before I have a few kits. I’m planning to give them out and keep two,” she said.

Karen and her mother thanked Smah for her caring heart.

“We love bunnies so much and I cannot understand people who do not look after them. Smah will be blessed, I’m glad I met her. Also, thank you to the COURIER for publishing her plea because through it we managed to meet with her,” they said.
