Different stakeholders join hands to assist South Hills’ Good Samaritan

Cellular Bar, in partnership with different stakeholders, generously donated with food parcels and baby products on July 8 in South Hills.

Cellular Bar, in partnership with different stakeholders, generously donated food parcels and baby products to South Hills residents on July 8.

With the help of numerous organisations, the donations were made to Joan Theron who then handed them over to many residents who came through on the day.

Theron was assisted with the donations following her remarkable work that she does for the community. At least 100 food parcels, about 56 packed baby products, blankets and a stack of pumpkins were donated on the day.

The food parcels contained of a small portion of mealie meal, potatoes, baked beans, tinned tomatoes, rice, samp, bread, soup and noodles.

Since commencement of lockdown, she has fed over hundred families through her weekly soup kitchen. She has done this by hosting a soup kitchen on Tuesday and Thursday weekly, where the community is served with deliciously prepared meals and soup.

Lizelle Pretorius of Cellular Bar told the COURIER that through their donation they wanted to encourage more people to lend a helping hand to Joan.

“We appreciate the work that she does for the community, she helps make a difference to many people’s lives. We would also like to encourage businesses in the South of Johannesburg to help her go an extra mile. We will also be continuing our partnership with her from now moving forward,” she said.

Extra mile

With the state of the country, Joan Theron has decided to go out of her way to lend a helping hand in the lives of others.

She is a caterer who has decided to put her cooking skills to good use by serving her community without any expectations.

According to Theron, she realised that there was much she needed to do for the community, especially during this time.

“People have always known that there is food at my place and they would come and ask me for food. I then told my husband that there was a big need to help our community. I eventually started using our own money and we started with soup,” she said.

Theron has also been sponsored by Meals on Wheels and other keen individual sponsors who help keep her work afloat.

She also said there is a dire need of donations in order to keep the kitchen running.

“Every week we get more people who come to the kitchen and it becomes so bad that at times I would need to use money from my own pocket. I do get support from close friends and family members, since my husband and I are not employed,” said Theron.
