Whiz kid develops app for schools

Simphiwe wants to pursue computer sciences after matric and have a company that will continue to develop other apps.

Long queues for screening learners in the morning prompted Diversity High School Grade 12 learner Simphiwe Radebe to create an application that can help with the everyday screening in schools.

The 17-year-old learner from Elandspark said he was concerned by the time it takes for the screening of the learners, hence he decided to create this app.

He calls it Diversity High App. It speeds up the process and it’s also an app that does other functions for the particular school and he would like it to be used in all the schools.

How does it work?

He said you download the app on your smartphone and the school will have all the database they need.

“Once you registered, you will be able to login. There are different templates where a learner can have temperature taken, school homework uploaded, teachers’ profiles, school’s profile and previous papers for revision. This is a great app where almost everything can be found,” explained Simphiwe.

What happens if you do not have data?

Simphiwe said for now there can be separate lines for those who do not have data or smartphones, as this is a pilot project these are challenges that are real and they can be tackled as time goes by.

“We could ask the school for Wi-Fi at first for registration and it can be opened in the morning only, also the Department of Education can assist in terms of Wi-Fi,” he said.

He said there are other learners that he bounced ideas with at the school.

“We have seen the advantages of this app. I have used it and it works wonderfully. The data can be uploaded quickly and once there it will be stored forever,” he noted.

Simphiwe wants to pursue computer sciences after matric and have a company which will continue to develop other apps. He said for now he knows six different programming languages which helped him to develop the app. Those are python, kotlin, java, java script, MySQL and CSS.

“I would like to thank my teachers who allowed me to grow and also my parents, Sibusiso and Nomsa Radebe who provided support and believing in me. I will always be grateful for their backing,” he said.

Diversity High School principal Hosea Maboya praised Simphiwe in his journey. He said: “It is great to have a learner who shows and takes initiative in technology, which is in line with 4IR. Beside this app, Simphiwe was instrumental in designing our school website.

“We are proud that our teachers are helping the learners to identify their talent at an early age. The school appreciates his contribution and he must continue to do well.”
