Firefighters from three stations battle Brakpan blaze

The cause of the fire will be investigated.

The sky over Vulcania was thick with smoke on Sunday afternoon after a fire in the area.

Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) received a report of a grass fire at the corner of Lemmer Road and End Street at 3.36pm and firefighters responded immediately.

“Heavy smoke could be seen from a distance and immediately backup was summoned from the district fire stations,” said William Ntladi, district manager media liaison for DEMS.

“Firefighters from the Benoni Central and Tsakani fire stations responded swiftly to assist with extra resources.

Firefighters responded immediately to the scene and attacked the blaze using water from all three fire engines on scene.

“On arrival, it was found that it wasn’t a grass fire as reported, but three piles of polystyrene pipes.

“All of them were well alight, emitting heavy, dense black smoke into the atmosphere.”

Ntladi explained that firefighters attacked the blaze using water from all three fire engines on scene.

“More water to supplement the fire suppression was from a nearby fire hydrant,” he said.

“The sustenance of water supply assisted with the swift extinguishment of the blaze, preventing it from spreading to nearby structures.”
