Truck loses its load as brakes fail on Comaro Road

The truck driver lost control of his vehicle at the bottom of the hill and overturned crashing into a residential wall.

On Thursday 4 June at around 12 noon, Fidelity ADT specialised response officer, Nelson Maboko was patrolling on Comaro Road in the South of Johannesburg when he noticed a truck speeding past him, seemingly out of control.

Officer Maboko decided to follow the truck. The truck driver eventually lost control of his vehicle at the bottom of the hill and overturned crashing into a residential wall.

Maboko who was first on the scene said, “My first priority was to try and get the driver out of the truck, but all the doors were locked. The windscreen was completely shattered, so I helped the driver climb out the front window instead.”

He immediately called for an ambulance as the driver had minor injuries on his head. Fortunately, ER24 arrived quickly.

The next challenge was to manage the spillage from the truck, which was carrying a full load of vegetables, which were now scattered all over the road. Officer Maboko alerted the SAPS and called for additional backup as a crowd had started gathering to loot the vegetables.

Chubb Security also arrived to help and soon after that Mondeor SAPS and metro police arrived to manage the scene. Linda Goodenough, the community development manager for Fidelity ADT, commended Maboko for his management of the scene.

He has just recently been deployed to strengthen security in the Mulbarton and Glenvista areas. Maboko has been with Fidelity ADT for the past 13 years. Goodenough said the specialised training Maboko brings is key for the local teams.

“He has undergone advanced tactical firearm and security training and does refreshers every three months.” He has also trained with the SAPS. Taking control and managing a crime scene is one of the key strengths of the Specialised Response Teams and Maboko’s experience will be an invaluable asset to our teams,” she said.

“I am so glad he was there to assist. This is exactly the kind of experience which saves lives. The first golden hour in an accident is critical and I am so proud of the way officer Maboko conducted himself and preserved the accident scene,” she concludes.
