Booysens

Residents of Booysens informal settlement have been complaining about the overflow of sewage and illegal dumping.

On February 11, Mnyameni conducted an oversight visit to the settlement. He was joined by JRA and Pikitup officials to listen to the concerns of the residents and address what kind of action will be taken.

Mnyameni said the issue of Booysens informal settlement is serious and needs to be attended too.

“I brought JRA and Pikitup to try and help residents with cleaning the settlement.

“JRA’s task was to open a water channel so to avoid stormwater that is discharging water directly to people’s shacks, while Pikitup task was to clean and provide bins,” said Mnyameni.

Mnyameni promised to return to the settlement in the coming weeks to see if the entities are keeping to their promises in keeping the place clean.

Turffontein

Residents in Kennedy and Bishop streets in Turffontein were up in arms after experiencing a blackout for two weeks.

The residents demanded the councillor to come to their aid as they wanted City Power to stop deploying subcontractors.

Residents said, in the presence of the councillor, they believe this blackout is caused by the subcontractors because after fixing things they leave cables exposed and make it easier for thugs to steal.

On top of their demands, they want illegal dumping to be dealt with because it breeds rats and flies.

“With the issue of blackouts people should report the matter to City Power and if they don’t get help they can escalate the matter to me with a reference number.

“I will call a public meeting and invite City Power and other stakeholders so that all residents can get a chance to address their concerns,” said Mnyameni.

‘White House’

The COURIER published a story of residents who live at ‘white house’ in Kenilworth and who are fed up with having to get water from a leak at the main supply.

Mnyameni attended to the residents and he informed that the only solution to this is if they go to a police station and do an affidavit, which will be taken to the municipality.

“In that affidavit, you will request to be permitted to pay for water and electricity.

“As we speak you are illegals residing here and I can’t renovate the property because it doesn’t belong to you or me,” said Mnyameni.
